Network Central

The center of the Departmental Network is located in 3076 Young Hall. The Network Central has multimode fiber links to the Young Hall campus fiber room, the Learning Center, MBI, West Wing hub room, East Wing hub room, and MolSci Building hub room. Two sets of fiber connections from PSNet Cisco AGS+ interfaces are terminated here as well. In addition, multiple Cat 5 UTP lines have been installed from the Network Central to hub rooms in Young Hall and MolSci Building.

The core of the departmental network consists of a single Lannet LET-36 hub, populated with segment and host switching ethernet modules, providing an agregate bandwidth of 280Mbps. All switching modules interface with the cell-based High-Speed Backplane (1.28Gbps) in LET-36 that serves as a Collapsed Backbone.

The switched segment ports connect the central hub to four Ethernet Backplanes in each of the peripheral LET-36 hubs. The switched host ports are used for connections to the AGS+ CISCO router and to hosts providing central network services. All switched ports are currently grouped into two VLANs corresponding to the two router ports.
