Computer Networks in Young Hall - West Wing
Infrastructure
West Wing of Young Hall is an older part of the building that is not scheduled
to be renovated in the foreseeable future. In order to modernize the network
infrastructure, a hub room has been set up on the third floor of the Wing and
5" conduits placed between the hub room and the remaining floors. On the order
of a 100 Cat 5 UTP runs have been installed throughout the West Wing and
punched down in the hub room.
About a dozen nodes in the Wing still rely on the older 10Base5 (yellow hose)
Backbone that snakes throughout the West Wing and detours into Geology to
connect Solid-State Science Laboratory.
The network electronics in this Wing consist of a single LANNET LET-36 hub
that provides connections to approx. 50 Ethernet nodes and two Datability
terminal servers providing 25 connections. In addition, there are eight
'intelligent' Asante hubs located around West Wing with connections to
approx. 100 nodes. The brouter module in the LET-36 is used to connect the
older (thicknet) part of the network to the rest of the departmental network.
Applications
West Wing houses Administrative and Faculty Offices, Graduate and Undergraduate
Student Offices, and several Biochemistry and Physical Chemistry Reseach
Laboratories.
