NIH RO1 Quick Start
NIH RO1 Electronic Submission QUICK START

Welcome to the Biochemistry Division RO1 Electronic Quick Start
The Biochemistry Divisional Assistants and the Business Office are here to help!

To begin, please advise your Fund Manager at the Business Office if you are planning to submit a grant proposal and the due date. Your Fund Manager will be happy assist you in creating and/or modifying your budget. Please notify your Fund Manager as soon as possible so they will have ample time to assist you with your submission. Note: The budget can be created independently of the science portion of your application.

STEP 1:
To create your online application, you will need the following materials:

PureEdge Viewer: Software you will need to complete and upload the Grant Application Package. The PureEdge Viewer can be downloaded from: http://www.grants.gov/resources/download_software.jsp

Apple Logo Attention Apple users: Currently, PureEdge software is only PC compatible. Support for the Apple platform is available. Please contact Penny Jennings (penny@chem.ucla.edu x57071) or Steven Simak (ssimak@chem.ucla.edu x40092) for more information.
Application Package: Each grant type has its own application package. Go to http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/find_app.htm for R01 information.
Application Guide: Each grant type has its own application guide. Go to http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/424/index.htm for R01 information.

STEP 2:
Prepare your grant application. The application involves 2 parts: required generic 424 forms and a sub-application that varies from grant type to grant type. For example, for an NIH R01 grant you will fill out the 424 forms and follow instructions for including a PHS 398 application. Both the 424 and the 398 parts require you to add many attachments as pdfs. For an example of the way these forms were presented in one R01 grant, please see SF 424 (R&R) and Research and Related Other Project Information.

Detailed instructions are included in the RO1 Grant Application Guide (above). Both the forms and the data entered are likely to change and OCGA keeps such information current at the OCGA Commonly Needed Information Page. A final application consists of completed forms and all the pdfs downloaded as attachments. The NIH later puts them all together in the order it specifies.

STEP 3:
E-mail the Grant Application Package to the Grant Analyst at the Office of Contract and Grant Administration (x40167) who handles your account.

STEP 4:
Incorporate any changes from the OCGA into your proposal.

STEP 5:
Resubmit your revised application via e-mail to OCGA. OCGA will submit your application to the government. A hard copy of the grant application is not required. However, you will be required to submit a hardcopy of the Goldenrod and 740 forms to OCGA via campus mail (see Step 8 ).

STEP 6:
Complete the Goldenrod and 740 forms as you have in the past. Since you are submitting your grant on-line, write "NIH through grants.gov" in the Agency Name and Agency Address section, and put "N/A" for Number of Copies Requested by Agency. (See sample below.)

STEP 7:
After the grant is submitted, the government will send you and OCGA an e-mail confirmation of your submission. If errors are detected, these errors must be corrected and the application resubmitted before your grant will be considered.  The corrections are made by OCGA, in consultation with you. The OCGA will resubmit your corrected application to the government. Finally, provide a printed copy of your completed grant submission to the Business Office for their files.
