STM's Built in my Group at IBM

Thanks to Reto Schlittler with whom I've been involved in these devleopments. The pocket sized STM was first developed by Christoph Gerber in the 80's it changed the way STM's looked. The first STM systems were difficult to operate. Today it's pretty easy and they are tools rather than research area in their own right.

Picture 8: My first encounter with an STM 1983: In a group fromed by George Bednorz, Dieter Pohl, Daniel Wittmer and myself, the STM seen here was based on the origional Binnig and Rohrer design. It was to be used for technology research. It was too early for such applications then. George left for working with powders with Karl Alex Muller which led to other great things at the IBM Zurich Laboratory.

I want to collect images of STM and AFM systems. Please send me your images to me and I will try to set up a Gallery of Historical machines. Contact: gim@chem.ucla.edu
