S-Adenosyl-L-methionine:Mg-protoporphyrin IX methyltransferase catalyzes the methylation of Mg-protoporphyrin in the following reaction:

The reaction is thought to prevent the spontaneous decarboxylation of the 6-propionate during later steps in chlorophyll biosynthesis. BchM has been identified as encoding the methyl transferase in bacteria and homologs have been found in algae and plants.
