(b. 1926), B.Sc. 1949, M.Sc. 1950, University of Sydney; Ph.D. 1952, Oxford University.

Current research includes stereochemistry and NMR spectroscopy. Isotope effects on chemical shifts, particularly those of a conformational (equilibrium) origin are under investigation.

Compound I has been synthesized and shows observably diastereotopic protons in the monodeuterated methyl group. This work has led to an NMR method for directly determining the configuration of a CHDT group by means of tritium NMR. Thus, the tritium NMR chemical shifts in II and III are observably different.

The conformations of cyclic molecules are being studied experimentally by NMR and theoretically by molecular mechanics and ab initio quantum mechanical methods.
