Academic Misconduct Policy

Just don't do it.

Don't even give the instructor a chance to think that you are doing it. Use common sense. Things to avoid include:

Shifty eyes, especially in the direction of another student's paper.

Open backpacks.

Unnecessary or forbidden materials on the desk during an exam or quiz.

Continuing to write after time is called: How would you feel if the person next to you was allowed two extra minutes on the same exam?) The penalties for writing after time is called are significant: up to ten points (and in some cases even more) will be deducted from your exam score or your exam may not even be collected. Prosecution by the Dean of Students may also occur. These penalties far outweigh any small number of points you might hope to gain by continuing to write after time is called, so just don't even think about it!

Allowed and forbidden exam tools: For most exams you are allowed to bring your molecular models. You will most probably not be allowed the use of a calculator or note cards. Cell phones, PDAs, personal CD players, pagers, and other electronic devices are prohibited at all times. If you answer your cell phone during an exam, we are forced to assume you are cheating, and your exam score will suffer accordingly. If you are expecting an emergency, leave the phone or pager with the instructor. Otherwise, don't bring it to the exam

Altering an exam before submitting it for a regrade. This will get you dismissed from UCLA.

If caught in an act of academic misconduct relating to homework, a quiz, or an exam, you will be awarded a zero, fail the course, or worse. The exact penalties will be determined by the instructor, the nature of the infraction, and the Dean of Students. Medical, professional, graduate, and other post-baccalaureate schools do not look highly upon students who have been denied registration privileges at UCLA due to academic dishonesty. Please note that various and significant precautions are taken to discourage cheating on exam regrades. For example, a certain percentage of exams may be photocopied before being returned. If it is discovered that you make a change on your answer before submitting for a regrade the case will be reported to the Dean of Students, without warning and without possibility of appeal, and the maximum penalty requested. This maximum penalty is permanent expulsion from UCLA. So please don't even attempt to cheat. The penalties are much too severe.
