Functional Group Preparations
Epoxide
Epoxides are cyclic ethers with the ether oxygen in a three-membered
ring. They are valuable and reactive synthetic intermediates because
of their ring strain. Of the many ways to prepare epoxides, reaction
of an alkene with a peroxyacid (also called a peracid) such as peracetic
acid (CH3CO3H) is most common. This reaction
is called epoxidation (Section 8.6B).
