Sulfonium Salt

Sulfonium salts are prepared by SN2 reaction of a sulfide with a primary or secondary haloalkane.  This is an SN2 reaction and is thus subject to the usual SN2 restrictions.  Sulfides are generally good nucleophiles.  Unlike the parallel reaction to form ammonium salt, over-alkylation is not a problem (Section 7.3A).
