Mike JungProf. Michael Jung Awarded 2016 Seaborg Medal - On Nov. 12, 2016, UCLA organic chemistry professor Jung was honored at the Seaborg Symposium titled "Drug Discovery: From Bench to Market". The Seaborg medal was presented to him at the evening dinner banquet at the new Luskin Center. To learn more, visit the Seaborg Symposium website.

Fraser StoddartProf. Emeritus Sir Fraser Stoddart Received the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry - He received the award jointly with Jean-Pierre Sauvage and Bernard L. Feringa "for their design and production of molecular machines". Our department has the most Nobel Laureates of any UCLA department, with four emeritus faculty & three alumni.

New FacultyWelcome New Faculty: Prof. Jose Rodriguez and Prof. Roy Wollman Joined the Department in 2016 - Rodriguez's group studies the complex architecture of biological systems - from single biomolecules to cellular assemblies - at high resolution. Wollman's group studies information processing in intracellular and intercellular signaling networks in the presence of a high degree of single-cell variability.

John Roberts and othersJohn D. Roberts Endowed Term Chair in Chemistry - This chair honors Prof. John D. ("Jack") Roberts, (B.A. '41, Ph.D. '44), one of the most influential chemists of the last 75 years, who passed away in October 2016. Fundraising for this chair which was announced at the Inaugural John D. Roberts lecture in May 2016, which Roberts attended.

Inaugural Atkinson/West Prizes - The first of the Daniel Atkinson and Charles West Prizes in Metabolic Biochemistry were presented to four biochemistry students at commencement ceremonies in June 2016. These awards were established to honor two UCLA chemistry faculty who were largely responsible for the development of biochemistry within the department. Click here to learn how to contribute.

Jeffrey ZinkProf. Jeffrey Zink and his wife, Helo, recently established the Jeffrey and Helo Zink Endowed Professional Development Term Chair in Chemistry - The term chair will foster young faculty starting their careers at UCLA. The gift is part of the Jung matching gift initiative in the department, which enables the department to match the gift one to one.

Michael JungProstate Drug Research Leads to $1.14 Billion Royalty Payment to UCLA - Prof. Michael Jung led the UCLA research team whose discoveries resulted in the development of the leading prostate cancer drug enzalutamide (Xtandi). The anti-androgen drug, which has been found effective in slowing or stopping the progression of late-stage prostate cancer for several months.

MICYear-End Message from UCLA's Molecular Instrumentation Center (MIC) - With the retirement of long-time director Dr. Jane Strouse, the tragic loss of Dr. Dahni Amirsakis, the hiring of new NMR scientist Dr. Ta-Chung "TC" Ong, and the arrival of a new solid-state 600 Mhz NMR machine and a new Quadrupole/TOF Mass Spectrometer, it has been a busy year for the MIC.

Richard Buller2016 Alumni Awardee Dr. Richard Buller ('71) Honored at Graduation - On June 11, 2016, the UCLA Chemistry and Biochemistry 2016 Alumni Award was presented to commencement speaker Dr. Richard Buller, Vice President of Oncology Clinical Development, Pfizer. His inspiring commencement speech was the perfect send-off for the new graduates.

Teacher ScholarsTeacher Scholars Join Department - Three Postdoctoral Teacher-Scholars have joined our instructional faculty this year – Dr. Shuming Chen, Dr. Jacquelin Kammeyer and Dr. Zhao Li. Our Postdoctoral Teacher-Scholar program allows postdoctoral scholars to experience research and teaching at the same time as a way to prepare them for future faculty positions.

CS 24 Court of Sciences Lecture Halls Renovated - After decades of heavy use, UCLA's Court of Sciences lecture halls (CS76, Kenneth Trueblood Lecture Hall CS50 & CS24) underwent major renovations this summer. Seating was refurbished, new audiovisual screens, whiteboards and lecture podiums, & energy-efficient lighting systems were installed.

HBCU HBCU Students Conduct Research at UCLA this Summer - Six undergraduate students from three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) visited us this summer to conduct research in our faculty labs as part of the Summer Research and Admission Pathways Program which introduces bright undergraduates to UCLA with the goal of attracting them to apply for graduate school.

MallUCLA Scientists Demystify Nanoscience for Mall Shoppers - Graduate students in the UCLA Nanoscience at the Mall project, directed by Prof. Sarah Tolbert, visited local malls this Spring to engage children and their parents in conversations about nanoscience (the study of materials on an atomic or molecular scale).

Miguel Garcia-Garibay with faculty and staffProf. Miguel García-Garibay Named Dean of the UCLA College of Letters and Science, Division of Physical Sciences - A renowned scholar and former chair of the UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, García-Garibay took over the duties of Dean of Physical Sciences on July 1, 2016. Faculty and staff gathered for a surprise celebration on May 17, 2016 to honor him and thank him for his service.

new hoodsOrganic Chemistry Lab Renovation - After more than two decades of heavy use, the organic chemistry instructional laboratories are currently being renovated and will be outfitted with state-of-the-art teaching fume-hoods (similar to those pictured left) which will allow for 360 degree viewing for instructors and students.

Awards2016 Annual Departmental Awards Ceremony - Faculty, donors, students and their families attended event on December 6, 2016. In addition to recognizing the efforts of our accomplished students and faculty, we had an opportunity to celebrate our department's excellence in teaching and research.

Gelbart ArtACS Festschrift Honors Prof. William Gelbart - The American Chemical Society (ACS) paid tribute to the accomplishments of Prof. William Gelbart in a special issue of The Journal of Physical Chemistry in honor of his 70th birthday. The July 7, 2016 issue was titled "The William M. Gelbart Festschrift", with cover art (pictured at left) created by Gelbart's daughter, artist Eva Gelbart.

Heather TiensonDr. Heather Tienson Featured in Los Angeles Times Article About Using Wikipedia in the Classroom - In her undergraduate biochemistry classes Tienson's students expand on Wikipedia articles to hone their research and writing skills. She assigns about a dozen honors students each quarter to find a topic that needs improving on Wikipedia.
