ABOUT DONALD J. CRAM

Donald J. Cram, who created many areas of chemistry, died on June 17, 2001. This symposium celebrates his life and its lasting impact on Chemistry. In 1952, Cram's Rule became the prototype for the understanding of stereoselective relactions, a field that has continued to grow until flowering into more and more powerful methods of asymmetric catalysis fifty years later, honored by this year's Nobel Prize to Sharpless, Noyori and Knowles. From the synthesis of modern pharmaceuticals to the manufacture of liquid crystal displays, the revolution that began with Cram's Rule has had an enormous impact on human health and industrial productivity. This is but one example: Cram created paradigms in most areas of organic chemistry. Among these, the creation of the field of host-guest chemistry led to his Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987. This symposium will emphasize stereoselectivity, host-guest chemistry, and Cram's legacy reflected in his students and their achievements.

Speakers include many friends and former associates of Donald Cram, as well as leaders in the fields of asymmetric reactions and host-guest chemistry.
