Obtaining Access to the UCLA Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry NMR Spectrometers

All members of the UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry may use the NMR spectrometers after training by the NMR lab personnel.  For routine usage, regularly scheduled “checkout” sessions are offered every week.  (Users from other departments must first check with Jane Strouse (strousej@chem.ucla.edu) before attending any checkout sessions.)  It is strongly recommended that potential users come to these sessions near to the time when they anticipate actual usage.  These are not sessions on NMR theory; they cover what is needed to efficiently use the current equipment and its associated software.  Going through these sessions to “get them out of the way” for later usage is a waste of everyone’s time.  The weekly schedule is given below.  (If you cannot attend the regularly scheduled sessions due to schedule conflicts, contact Jane Strouse (strousej@chem.ucla.edu) and we will schedule a special session for you.)

Automation using the Sample Changer

Mondays 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. - 1421 Mol. Sci.

Data Processing with Topspin & Xwinnmr

Tuesdays 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon - 1416 Mol. Sci.

Manual Data Acquisition with Xwinnmr & Probe Tuning

Wednesdays 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon  -  1421 Mol. Sci.

Required for use of ³500 MHz spectrometers.

Manual Data Acquisition with Topspin Check-out is a prerequisite.

Variable Temperature

Thursdays 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.  -  1421 Mol. Sci.

Manual Data Acquisition Check-out is a prerequisite.

Manual Data Acquisition with Topspin

Fridays 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.  -  1421 Mol. Sci.

(You must pass the Data Processing Check-out exam prior to Thursday at 3:00 P.M. to be assured of spectrometer time for this checkout on Friday!)

Using the 600 MHz spectrometer

Email Jane Strouse at taylor@chem.ucla.edu for training on the 600.

Manual Data Acquisition with Xwinnmr & Probe Tuning is a prerequisite.

It is recommended that for routine usage, the first checkout should be “Automation using the Sample Changer”.  This will provide rapid access to routine spectra.  Most users will need to re-process their data at least occasionally.  Thus, the “Data Processing with Topspin & Xwinnmr” checkout should probably be taken at some time.  (The order of the sample changer and data processing checkouts does not matter at all.)  If you need to acquire data manually, you must practice data processing prior to attending the “Manual Data Acquisition with Topspin” session.  If you plan to use the 500 MHz or 600 MHz spectrometers, you must attend the “Manual Data Acquisition with Xwinnmr & Probe Tuning” checkout after first attending the Manual Data Acquisition with Topspin” checkout.  You need to attend the “Variable Temperature” checkout only if you intend to run spectra other than at room temperature.  Since these checkouts are offered every week, you will not have to wait long to attend the session you need when you need it.  If you have not used the spectrometers for a while and feel the need for a refresher, please attend the appropriate session(s) again.
