Bear--Churchill Manitoba Canada

ÒbearÓ

Sows with cubs do not come out of their dens until the ice has already formed. Early in the polar bear high season, most of the animals to be seen are males, some of whom weigh as much as 1200 pounds. Sometimes they pass the time wallowing in the snow, alone or with other bears. Other times, the males will fight. These are not the fierce battles associated with mating season. My very strong impression is that this activity is a form of male bonding--the ursine equivalent of a good natured punch to the shoulder, a slap on the rump, or a bout of arm wrestling over bottles of Coors. The fight usually ends when one or both male bears lose interest in the sport.
