EDUCATION: University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) (1994-present)
Ph.D., Organic Chemistry, expected June 1999
Thesis: Synthesis of Complex Heterocycles Via Fischer Carbene Complexes
Advisor: Professor Craig A. Merlic
University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) (1987-1992)
B.S., Material Chemistry (1992)
Thesis: Preparation and Study of Gamma-AlOOH Sol and Design and Coding of a Computer Program for Determination of Surface Area and Pore Size Distribution of Ceramic Membranes
RESEARCH: UCLA, Research Assistant (1995-present)
  • Synthesized the first pyridyl amino chromium carbene complexes. Utilized the carbene complexes in cycloaddtion reactions with alkynes to synthesize a series of quinolizones, indolizines and pyrindenones.
  • Synthesized a series of carbazoles via a novel Diels-Alder reaction of ketenimines derived from Fischer carbene complexes and isonitriles.
  • Synthesized the first beta-keto Fischer carbene complexes that bear acidic alpha-protons.
USTC, Undergraduate Research Assistant (1991-1992)
  • Synthesized gamma-AlOOH sol and studied its properties for the formation of ceramic membranes.
  • Wrote a computer program for the determination of surface area and pore size distribution of ceramic membranes.
EXPERIENCE: UCLA Teaching Assistant (1994-1998)
  • Instructed and supervised organic chemistry discussion and laboratory sections.
  • Maintained Virtual Office Hours homepage for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Procter & Gamble Guangzhou Ltd. Senior Research Associate
Product Development Department (PDD) (1992-1994)
  • Led a group of four people that developed and carried out the initial formulation, pilot production, and technical performance test of China Tide laundry product. Helped develop the statistical design of the subsequent Home Performance Test, and analyzed the test results. Tide laundry product is now distributed nationwide in China.
  • Provided technical and project management training to new management trainees and technicians.
  • Performed technical performance tests of different laundry components.
  • Set up and managed PDD laundry laboratory.
SKILLS: Chemistry
  • Extensive experience with air- and moisture-sensitive reagents.
  • Hands-on experience with NMR and FT-IR using Bruker NMR spectrometer, and Nicolet FT-IR spectrometer.
  • Substantial experience with GC, TLC and flash chromatography for isolation and purification of organic and organometallic compounds.
Computer
  • Trouble shooting of software and hardware performance.
  • Web Authoring, Visual Basic, C++ Programming.
