1998-1999 MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION

Dear Applicant:

&nbs p;

Thank you for your interest in applying for membership in the UCLA Student Committee for the Arts (SCA). We are one of the most active organizations on campus. Exciting and rewarding opportunities await you! SCA is your chance to become involved with a wide array of arts programming for UCLA's student population and the surrounding communities. Since its inception in 1962, SCA continues to make available to UCLA students the widest range of performing arts with the following objectives:

& nbsp;

Subsidizing Tickets

SCA will continue to make the best seats in the house available at an affordable price to UCLA students. UCLA Performing Arts (formerly known as Center for the Performing Arts) presents a great diversi ty of shows at Royce Hall, Schoenberg Hall, Freud Playhouse, and other venues. The Center's events range from Kodo to Zap Mama to Itzhak Pearlman. Tickets to these shows are worth up to $65, but SCA buys a number of the best seats in the house (usually at top price) and makes them available to UCLA students for $8 to $15.

Producing and Presenting Events

SCA is dedicated to expanding the palette of art that it presents, and actively seeks new and diverse art forms to present to our community. SCA produces an average of twenty shows a year, in a range of artistic forms, most of which are free. SCA has produced noon concerts at Westwood Plaza, acoustic ensembles at Kerckhoff Coffee House, alternative rock concerts a t the Cooperage, and a classical series at Schoenberg Hall, to name but a few. SCA has also presented household names such as Sandra Bernhard at Royce Hall and the Neville Brothers at the Wadsworth Theater.

Occasionally SCA produces ticketed events, such as last year's spectacular inaugural Jazz Studies Student and Faculty Concert, featuring Quincy Jones and Kenny Burrell, and 1997's Big Bad Voodoo Daddy concert at the Wadsworth. SCA made history as the fi rst student organization to program at the Wight Art Gallery when we presented Antenna Theater's Etiquette of the Undercaste (an interactive theater museum exhibit). SCA has had fourteen successful seasons with its popular Jazz at the Wadsworth Series (JAWS), a free monthly jazz concert series to students and the UCLA community.This year, with the return to Royce, SCA will be developing its new series titled Jazz and World Series.

Campus Liaison

SCA con tinues to encourage and co-produce with other campus organizations to stimulate and support student interest, attendance, and participation in cultural events and activities at UCLA. SCA has participated in World Fest, the UCLA Jazz and Regg ae Festival, Day Without Art, and Music and Dance on the Grass, and continues to seek new ways to strengthen our liaison with other campus organizations.

UCLA Performing Arts

SCA is the student voice to the Center's programming, as we recommend artists and art forms that we believe students would like to see. As the student division of UCLA Performing Arts (PA), SCA has a special working relationship with the Center's staff. In addition, SCA work s closely with the Center to present master classes, workshops, and student-only receptions for the Center's artists. SCA also presents guest speakers at the Center Stage Pre-performance Lecture Series.

To achieve and maintain these objectives, SCA requires a dedicated, diverse,and talented staff. The committee consists of currently enrolled UCLA student members, including 7 undergraduate and 7 graduate voting members, 2 undergraduate and 2 graduate alternate voting members, as well as non-voting support members. Please consider the attached position(s) that interest you, but also note that it is not necessary to apply for a specific position to be selected as a member of SCA. Also not e that having a position does not exclude you from producing shows or taking on any additional projects. In fact, for the committee to most fully function, all members should participate in projects that the committee decides to take on.

Those selected as SCA members are expected to:

Although SCA members are volunteers, work on the committee is not without its rewards. Committee members share responsibility for managing SCA's annual budget of over $250,000, take part in producing arts events on c ampus, attend and participate in professional performances, and gain an insider's perspective on the arts and entertainment worlds. The committee is a dynamic group of individuals who share a common interest in the arts. You can expect to make life-long f riends while serving on the committee.

Membership in SCA offers the potential to significantly touch your life and the lives of the students around you. We hope you will seriously consider taking the time and commitment to get involv ed. We look forward to meeting you in person and working with you in the coming year.

Sincerely,

Sally Baghdasarian, Co-Chair

Amy Sandov al, Co-Chair

Ferran Prat, Vice Chair

Charlene Kellett, Advisor
