Web-Based Technology

The faculty for the general chemistry laboratory courses are actively engaged in combining computer technology into our courses. The Molecular Science Project has been a pioneer in creating innovative Web-based technology that benefit students’ learning not only here at UCLA but also in many other colleges and universities throughout the nation. One of the major achievements in the Molecular Science Project is the development of the Calibrated Peer Review™ (CPR) software. This innovative program not only enhances student learning through peer review but it also improves student writing skills at the same time. Because the CPR software is Web based, it can be accessed and used by students and faculty at anytime. In fact, the CPR software has been integrated into many subjects other than chemistry. The software is currently used by over 300 different universities, colleges and high schools around the nation. The number is continuously growing.

Other innovations include the on-line technique videos, which allow students to learn the appropriate laboratory techniques before the experiment. DVD formats of the laboratory technique videos are also available for viewing in the laboratory. The DVD technology enables high quality video with excellent sound quality and picture resolution.

We also use commercially licensed Web based software to enhance our courses. WebCT and Moodle are powerful Web-based programs that allow instructors to set up on-line exams with rapid feedback. Currently two of our lab courses have on-line exams integrated in the curriculum. Another commonly used Web-based software tool is the Mastering Chemistry (MC Web). This powerful program, which is used in both laboratory and lecture courses also provides immediate feedback to students as they study and evaluate their mastery of the course material.
