Illustrated Glossary of Organic Chemistry

Nitric acid: HONO2. A strong Bronsted-Lowry acid, commonly used as a non-nucleophilic proton source and oxidizing agent. pKa = -1.3 . The term can also refer to an aqueous solution of HONO2. When the concentration of HNO3 exceeds 86% the solution is termed fuming nitric acid, because at this concentration fumes form above the solution when exposed to air.
