Silyl ether: An ether in which one of the atoms bonded to oxygen is a silicon atom instead of a carbon atom. Most commonly encountered as an alcohol protecting group.

Trimethylsilyl ether
(TMS ether)
Tert-butyldimethylsilyl ether
(tBDMS ether)
Tert-butyldiphenylsilyl ether
(tBDPS ether)
Some silyl ethers of benzyl alcohol. The silyl groups are shown in red.
