Dec 07, 2004

DOs and DON'Ts for the FINAL:
- Model kits are allowed, but must be unassembled when brought into the room
- Do not write in RED pen - that's just stupid
- Calculators are NOT allowed
- There are NO REGRADES of the FINAL
- Bring some form of PHOTO ID with you, ALL IDs WILL BE CHECKED

Dec 07, 2004

GRADING POLICY for the FINAL:
- Graded out of 200 points, but with bonus questions there will be 230 points available
- Score 160 or higher and that's an automatic A irregardless of what you've scored up to that point
- Improve your performance by 20% or more on the FINAL relative to your pre-final percentage score, and the grade you get will be boosted to the next highest one, i.e., a B- goes to a B, a B goes to a B+ etc... (not applicable for A to A+)
- If you improve your performance by 15% on the FINAL relative to your pre-final percentage score AND beat the FINAL MEAN, you get the same deal as for the 20%ers
- NOTE: your current percentage is based ONLY on exams you have taken, if you missed a quiz or a midterm, for the purposes of working out your current pre-final percentage, that doesn't count as a zero, I just don't figure it into the equation, i.e., I'm not rewarding people for missing quizzes and midterms

Nov 15, 2004

Thanks to the student who spotted the mistake in the acids and bases problem set: the very first entry in 1a should be Cl3CCO2H - in the problem set I missed out the carbon to which the three Cl atoms are attached, oops!

Nov 15, 2004

Lecture 19 Assignments: Reading 8.1-8.6 Problems 8.1-8.3, 8.9-8.13

Nov 12, 2004

So, for those of you interested, there are about 313 people actively participating in the class (i.e., taking exams, as far as I can tell), and we had about 200 people in class today. That's about a two-thirds attendance, which is on the low side. From the list of names given, the average points total for students attending class is TEN POINTS HIGHER than for those not attending class - out of a total of 160 points so far... draw your own conclusions. Of the 25 students with the highest scores in the class, 20 of them were in class today. Of the 25 students with the lowest scores in the class (those who, as far as I can tell, have not dropped), 10 of them were in class today.

Nov 12, 2004

A "How-To" Guide for Quiz 2 is posted below, explaining how to answer the questions...

Lecture 17 Assignments: Reading 6.6-6.7, 10.9 Problems 10.5

Nov 08, 2004

Thanks to the student who pointed out that I can't count carbons! On the carbocation rearrangement handout, the bottom ring expansion example was incorrect (there was a H atom where there should have been a methyl group). A correct version is now posted... although, thinking about it, once the ring expansion has occurred, the secondary carbocation would probably undergo a 1,2-hydride shift to form a tertiary (and therefore more stable) carbocation, resulting in the X group ending up on the same ring-carbon as the methyl group... oops. Well, hopefully you managed to follow that!

Nov 03, 2004

A note from Adam: why (as drawn) is the nitrogen atom in methyl isocyanate Me-N=C=O sp2 hybridized and not sp? Well, it has three things around it, two atoms and one lone pair, and so will hybridize to form 3 sp2 orbitals, and one p orbital will remain unhybridized. The lone pair gets placed in one of the lower energy sp2 hybrid orbitals. In the case of a carbocation, there are no electrons in the unhybridized p-orbital, so it does not need to hybridize to lower the energy of the system... (hopefully this will make sense to the people Adam confused earlier today!!)

Oct 26, 2004

Thanks to the people in office hours for pointing out mistakes on the stereochemistry problem set answer key: page 8, 8b, the bottom stereocenter should be R, not S, and vice-versa in the enantiomer; page 9, 9j, this is not the Z isomer, it cannot be determined, i.e., it is nether E nor Z. A new answer key is now posted...

Oct 22, 2004

Spotted a mistake in my lecture notes from Wednesday - at the bottom of page 7 (the second example in assigning priorities to groups, I mixed up which group was 3 and which was 4. The corrected pdf file has been uploaded to the lecture notes page. Also, I'm not sure if I got it wrong in class, but I'll be going over it again today...

Oct 21, 2004

...and on that note, YES, you can use your model kits for the exams in this class, but they MUST be brought in completely UNASSEMBLED

Oct 21, 2004

Thanks to some sleuthing by Cari, she has found a model kit on Amazon, it's expensive, but cheaper than most textbooks after all, and you could probably re-sell it in the future...

Oct 20, 2004

Lecture 9 Assignments: Reading 2.9-3.4, Problems 2.16, 2.46-2.61, 3.1-3.5, 3.10-3.23 (I didn't cover enough in class today for you to be able to do all of these problems yet, so don't stress...)

Oct 14, 2004

If you have trouble opening any of the pdf files on this site (like someone I know does...), make sure you have the latest version of Acrobat Reader. If you still have problems, it may be your browser, so just right-click, download the whole file to your computer and everything should be OK. Let me know of any more problems...

Oct 14, 2004

Please do not ask me if you can take the Final earlier in Finals week. The answer is NO, will remain NO, and has always been NO. Believe me, it would make my life easier too if it was earlier in the week, but I have no control over these things. Sorry...

Oct 14, 2004

The quiz 1 mean was an incredibly high 26/30, with over 30 people getting the maximum score of 35 points. Well Done!

Oct 14, 2004

Lecture 6 Assignments: Reading Ch 2-2.6, Problems 2.9, 2.27, 2.28

Oct 13, 2004

A few mistakes to point out in the notes/problem sets (I am human...): In the problem set on resonance, the third resonance contributor in the answer key for 10a (page 9) is missing a methyl group, and at the end of lecture 5, I got propanol wrong! I drew it with two carbons instead of three. The necessary pdf files have been replaced and are now correct. If you spot mistakes in my handouts or lecture notes, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Oct 12, 2004

The quiz tomorrow will NOT be multiple choice... but it will be short and fairly straightforward. GOOD LUCK!

Oct 06, 2004

***Due to unforseen circumstances, Adam had to cancel his discussion section this afternoon (1G) at the last minute - sorry for the inconvenience. No one will be graded down or lose points for this section not happening - if you are confident in the material so far, just pick up discussions next week, but feel free to sit in on ANY other discussion this week to catch-up if you wish***
