Spring 2013 - UCLA

Announcements

04/01/2013–

  1. Discussion sections will be held during week 1. This is a great opportunity to get to know your TA, your classmates, and to review 14C concepts.

  1. Still trying to get into the course?  We will open 15 additional spots this week. If you would like to be considered for enrollment, please fill out the information on the following link, which will be active starting at 11pm on Monday, April 1, 2013.

Google Docs Enrollment Request Form for Chem 14D

This form will remain open until 9am on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. The first 10 spaces available will be assigned based on the order requests are received. Additional spots will be filled based on a lottery system. Click here to view a screen shot of what the google doc form will look like.

If your request is granted, you will automatically be enrolled in Chem 14D during week 1.  Your discussion section assignment will be done randomly, but you will have an opportunity to switch if needed (see course website and syllabus). If we cannot accommodate your enrollment request, you will unfortunately not be able to enroll in Chem 14D this quarter. Please do not send Neil or the TAs additional email requests, as we will not be able to do anything further. We expect that Chem 14D will be offered again next year in the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.

3/24/2013–

• Welcome to the Chemistry 14D homepage for the Spring 2013! Here you can find important information about the course. Check back frequently for updates,  announcements, handouts, etc.

• Please pickup/setup a Turning Technologies-compatible ‘classroom clicker’ device before the first day of class. For more information, see the Clicker Page.

  1. Click here to download the course syllabus. [Updated 4.01.13]

  1. For students who were previously on the 14D waitlist, you have recently been enrolled

  1. If you are not currently enrolled, but are trying to secure a spot in the course, your best bet is to continue to keep an eye on the course enrollment in case a spot opens up.   You can also listen for announcements in class and keep an eye on this web page.

04/02/2013–

  1. Over-Enrollment Update Part II: The course is now enrolled to maximum capacity. If you are not currently enrolled in URSA or have not been contacted by email at this stage, you will unfortunately not be able to obtain a slot in Chem 14D this quarter.  Neil and the TAs have no further control over this, as CS50 is already over-capacity; please do not send additional enrollment requests, as there is honestly nothing we can do.

  1. Summer? Currently, Chem 14D will not be offered this summer. However, if there is sufficient interest in a potential summer offering, we can look into the possibility of having it during session C (instructor TBD, but it would not be Neil).  If you would be interested in taking Chem 14D in the summer, if it were to be offered, please click here to indicate your interest. Alternatively, you may wish to take Chem 14D next year in the Fall, Winter, or Spring. Neil will likely be teaching 14D again in the Spring of 2014.

  1. Over-Enrollment Update: We received >130 requests for 14D enrollment (not including any duplicates). Please be patient as we process these requests. We will post an update here within the next 24 hours.

  1. Wifi in CS50: Having clicker wifi problems? Try connecting to any of these non-password protected networks in CS 50: (a) chemwlan, (b) chemwlan-5g, (c) UCLA-web.  You can also try (d) UCLA-WIFI, although you may be prompted to login with your UCLA username/password.

04/05/2013–

• Discussion Section Switches: If you are interested in switching discussion sections, don’t forget to fill out the google doc request form on Saturday, April 6th between 9 and 10am.  Please note that if class sizes become too large, we will have to turn down requests.  If your request is granted, your section assignment will be adjusted for you in URSA by April 12.  If your request is denied, no change will take place and you may not receive any further notification from Neil or the TAs. The link to the google doc is here:

Click here to access the google doc request form to switch sections

(available, Saturday April 6 from 9am-10am)

• Honors Section: As mentioned in class, Neil will offer two honors sections (Chem 89) to accompany Chem 14D (see email for more info).  The two meeting times are being scheduled as follows:

Section 1: Mondays 3-3:50pm

Section 2: Mondays 4-4:50pm

(likely beginning during week 3)

If you are interested, please fill out the google doc linked below. The form will be available at 9am on Saturday, April 6 and will remain open until 7am on Sunday, April 7 [note, the time to request a spot has been extended]. The first 5 slots for each section will be granted on a first come / first serve basis.  After that, a random lottery process will be used to assign the remaining slots.
