Upcoming General Meeting

      On Tuesday, May 5th, SMACS will be hosting Paul Nelson from Southern California Edison at 6PM in WG Young 2033. He will be speaking about power plants (gas, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar) and the technology being used for renewable energy. Hope to see you there!


Chem Bowl and Science of Food

      The first annual Chemistry Bowl at UCLA on Saturday, April 4. If you are interested in participating on our team, please fill out this form. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you there!

      Another exciting upcoming event is our first ever collaboration with the Cooking and Baking Club on Sunday, April 5 at Sunset Rec. At the Science of Food event, attendees will learn to make dishes such as lasagna, fresh mozzarella, and liquid nitrogen ice cream! There is a fee of $5 and for more information about past cooking events, visit the Cooking and Baking Club Facebook page.


First Annual UCLA Chemistry Bowl

      SMACS is excited to announce the first annual Chemistry Bowl at UCLA on April 4, 2015. All students are welcome and participating organizations include SMACS, AIChE, and BiochemASE. Come out for a day of friendly competition and meet some of our wonderful members!

      If you are interested in participating on our team, please fill out this form. We look forward to seeing everyone at this event and fostering the relationships between all of our organizations.


Spring Break

      The end of the quarter is coming and spring break is quickly approaching. SMACS wishes everyone luck on finals and we hope to see you next quarter!

      One last reminder that officer applications are open here and due by March 22.


Week 8 Social & Week 9 General Meeting

      Thank you to everyone who came out to support our bake sale! Whether you baked, sold, or bought a cupcake, we appreciate your contribution.

      Our next general meeting is on Wednesday, March 4th at 6PM. Professor Yi Tang of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering will be speaking about "Biocatalytic synthesis of the blockbuster drug simvastatin."

      Lastly, a friendly reminder that we will be having a social at TLT in Westwood this Friday, Februrary 27, 2015. Come out and meet your fellow members!


Bake Sale and Officer Applications

      Thank you to everyone who attended our meeting last night and thank you to our speakers! Just a reminder that officer applications for 2015-16 are now available here and are due by March 22.

      Also our annual Bake Sale is tomorrow! Drop by the Court of Sciences to pick up an element from our periodic table of cupcakes.


General Meeting #3 and Bake Sale!

      Worried about the MCAT or GRE? Want a break from the monotony of midterms? Drop by our third general meeting of the quarter or our bake sale next week!

      On Wednesday, February 18th at 6PM we will be hosting Jaclyn Winnick from The Princeton Review for our third general meeting. She will be able to answer all of your questions about either the GRE or MCAT! Come by and pick up a bag of goodies and enter to win some great prizes such as the Graduate Admissions Guide and Anatomy of Medical School Admissions.

      Also, this meeting will include a quick Q&A session featuring SMACS alumni. Come by with questions for our wonderful alumni!

      Next week, we will be having our annual Bake Sale! Drop by the Court of Sciences on Friday, February 20 to pick up an element from our periodic table of cupcakes.

Crenshaw High School Outreach Event

      Thank you to everyone who attended our second General Meeting of the quarter and thank you to Dr. Garg for a wonderful presentation!

      As discussed in the meeting, SMACS will be having an outreach event led by Professor Kaner at Amino College Prep (2265 East 103rd Street). The event will be on Friday, January 30 from 12:30PM to 2PM and involve short lectures and demonstrations about materials such as thermoelectrics. Volunteers will assist in these demos and will receive free T-shirts!

      Sign up by Monday, January 26 on this form. Everyone is welcome to volunteer and we hope to see you all at the wonderful event.


General Meeting #2

      The second general meeting of the quarter will feature Dr. Neil Garg from the UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. His presentation is titled "From Undergraduate Studies to Academia and Other Careers in Chemistry."

      Professor Garg is an organic chemistry professor who researches natural product synthesis and reaction discovery. Join us as Professor Garg discusses the path that led him from his undergraduate studies at NYU to becoming a professor at UCLA. He will also speak about the different routes taken by some of his friends from college who also studied chemistry. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 21 at 6PM in YH 2033.

Welcome back!

      Happy new year! SMACS is starting the quarter with our first general meeting featuring Kimlin Johnson on Wednesday, January 14 at 6PM in YH 2033.

      Dr. Anthony Butch, Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, will also be speaking on Wednesday, January 14. His event is titled "An Inside Look into a Sports Drug Testing Laboratory" at Billingsley's on 11326 W Pico Blvd. Check-in begins at 6PM, dinner at 7PM, and the presentation at 8PM. The cost of attendence is $32.

      Once again, welcome back and we look forward to seeing you at our meetings!


Winter Break Update

      Happy holidays! We hope you are havng a wonderful winter break and wish you a happy new year. SMACS is excited to provide a wide selections of events for all of its members in the upcoming winter quarter.

      We will kick off the quarter with talks by Dr. Neil Garg and Kimlin Johnson. We are also working hard on bringing you more events such as a bake sale and MCAT/GRE session with Kaplan.

Exploring Your Universe

      Exploring Your Universe is today in the Court of Sciences. Our booth is in front of the inverted foutain, so stop by and check out our exhibit showcasing Crazy Chemistry experiments like lighting dollar bills on fire.

General Meeting #4

      To celebrate the 2014 International Year of Crystallography, SMACS is excited to welcome Dr. Saeed Khan on Wednesday, November 19 at 6PM in YH 2033. He will be giving a talk titled "Molecular Structures from X-ray Diffraction: 100 years of X-ray Crystallography."

      In addition to the short talk, there will also be a quick demo in the crystallography lab. Please remember to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes (lab coats are not necessary).

      Just a reminder, SMACS will be participating in Exploring Your Universe this weekend! Come out and join us for a day of fun and science.

Exploring Your Universe

EYU 2014

      SMACS is excited to be participating in the annual Exploring Your Universe event here at UCLA, but we need your help! We are recruiting volunteers for the event on Sunday, November 16th. More information about the event can be found here.

      SMACS is looking for volunteers to man our booth and conduct demos for EYU attendees.This year EYU is providing all volunteers with lunch and a free shirt; however, all SMACS volunteers need to complete a short online registration before October 31st.

National Chemistry Week!

General Meetings #2 and #3

      Thank you to everyone who helped out at STEAM Nation this year! We have another outreach event, Exploring Your Universe, coming up in November for those who are interested.

      This week we are fortunate enough to have two guest speakers. Alice Phung from the Science & Food Blog will be here on Thursday, October 22 from 6-8PM in Young Hall 2033 to talk to us about the "Science of Chocolate."

      On Friday, October 24, Professor Wenyuan Shi from the Department of Oral Biology and MIMG will be speaking from 6-8PM in Young Hall 2033 about his research on "Sugar and Oral Health."

Second General Meeting!

      Thank you to everyone who came to our first general meeting and social of the year! It was a great success and we hope to see all of you at future events.

Our next meeting will feature Alice Phung from the Science & Food Blog. The meeting will take place on October 22, 2014 from 6-8PM in Young Hall 2033.

      SMACS will also be participating in STEAM Nation on October 18, 2014 at West LA College. If you are interested in participating, please contact us through our email. We will be having our first informational meeting on Wednesday, October 15.

        In preparation for the upcoming school year, the UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will be holding an open house next week from September 29, 2014 to October 3, 2014.

        Drop by and meet your undergraduate counselors Tim and Denise between 9:00-11:30AM and 1:00-4:00PM in Young Hall 4009!
